This year, the award for "last producing plant standing" in the LipsYard garden goes to: Swiss Chard! (Beta vulgaris) Everything else has been touched by frost, or dug up long ago.
Similar to spinach and beets with a flavor that is bitter, pungent and slightly salty, Swiss chard boasts an exceptionally impressive list of health promoting nutrients. Although Swiss chard is available throughout the year, its season runs from June through August when it is at its best and in great abundance at the local market. Our warm fall has kept this plant going strong.
Charmaine usually stir fries it, but we've also blanched it, then folded Goat Cheese inside it for a wonderful grilled appetizer.
Last person standing from the original Bush (W.) administration is Vice President Dick Cheney, now that Karen Hughes has resigned from her job selling the values of America to the world's Muslims. Talk about a thankless job! This is a liason position that should have been in place right after 9/11, not created in 2005.
Welcome to the yard on the left. A place to contemplate, relax, and rant on the right.
